Cork gears up for Bike Week with more than 80 events – Echo Live

More than 80 events are being organised to take place throughout Cork City and County during the 10th year of National Bike Week taking place from Saturday, June 22 to Sunday, June 30.

Last year over 6,195 people of all ages and abilities took part in 72 coordinated Cork events organised across by local authorities, schools, cycling clubs, bike shops and cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.

Gillian Vaughan from Cork County Council said: “This year’s Cork Bike Week will once again have a wide variety of events to cater for all cyclists. Such events include Skibbereen Family Fun Cycle, the ‘Sunset Solstice’ Cycle to Old Head of Kinsale and Awbeg Free Wheelers ‘Getting to know you’ 20km Cycle in Buttevant just to name a few”.

For those in and around Cork City during the festival, there are a wide variety of city-based events taking place. Anita Lenihan from Cork City Council outlined some of the events planned in the city and suburbs. “One of the highpoints of Cork Bike Week each year is the Passage West to Blackrock Castle family fun cycle on Sunday, June 23.

“Any child who can sit on a bike seat will enjoy the sights and sounds on the spin and in the castle, where there will be free exhibit entry, refreshments and fun activities including face-painting and bling your bike. Also this day the Lord Mayor will launch a Cork Cycle Map showcasing cycle routes throughout Cork”.

Anita added “Another popular event each year is the lunchtime cycle to Fitzgerald’s Park Wednesday the June 26, where a free open-air concert will take place with sandwiches and ice cream being provided for those who arrive on bikes. Workplaces, families, communities are all encouraged to attend”.

Other events taking place in the city throughout the week include; a cycling tour of Cork City’s Streetscapes, Anti-theft workshop on Patrick St and a HGV road safety awareness demo on Grand Parade.

There are a number of returning events to the Cork Bike Week Calendar in 2019 including; The City to Ballincollig ‘Gunpowder Cycle’, The Ballinspittle to Courtmacsherry Cycle and the Cork City to Cobh Cycle.

The event is also delighted to announce new activities such as the Summer Solstice Cycle to the Old Head of Kinsale, West Cork Cycling Club Family Fun Cycle and the fun ‘Tune Trail Cycle’ event where participants will dress up in their most colourful outfits, bling their bikes and listen to music through speakers on a cycle from Fitzgeralds Park to Blackrock and back.
